AT&T To Buy T-Mobile USA For 39B In Stocks and Cash

I gotta say it, didn’t see that coming. But reports are stating that AT&T has inked the deal with Deutsche Telekom to acquire T-Mobile for a whopping 39 Billion dollars in cash and stocks. Now my question is, can this deal help AT&T gain some good impression on network quality and reliability ?? I guess thats exactly what AT&T is hoping for. The split is 25 Billion in cash and the rest in AT&T stock, which leaves Deutsche Telekom holding around 8% of AT&T and a seat on the board. Once its done, AT&T will have about 130 million subscribers and becomes the biggest carrier in the US.

Both networks run on GSM, so AT&T says they can put T-Mobile’s cell sites to use straight away. According to them its like getting five years worth of tower building in one shot, with network density going up around 30 percent in some of the most crowded areas. They are also promising 4G LTE to 95 percent of the US population, thats about 294 million people. Randall Stephenson, the AT&T chief, said it flat out that the deal “will improve network quality”.

Well, if you are a T-Mobile customer, dont expect anything to change tomorrow. The deal still needs regulatory approval and AT&T expects it to take around 12 months to close. Lets see if the dropped call jokes stop after that. Stay tuned.

Apple Airs 3 New iPhone Ads

Apple has aired 3 new iPhone ads today mainly focussing on App Store, iBooks store and iTunes store. Check them out below.

All three are short 30 second spots and they all start with the same if you dont have an iPhone line, and then the voiceover goes on to tell you what you are missing. The App Store one says you dont have the worlds largest selection of apps that are this easy to find and download right to your phone, and you can see the Delta boarding pass app, Starbucks Card Mobile, Chase, the eBay fashion app, The Economist and IMDB flashing by on the screen. The second one is about the built in iPod and the iTunes store and the third shows off iBooks.

Its the usual Apple style, white background, hands holding the phone and some piano music playing. And every one of them ends with the same tagline, “Yup, if you don’t have an iPhone, well, you don’t have an iPhone”. Theres no theres an app for that this time and the tone is a bit more in your face than before. Looks like Android is getting on their nerves a bit!! Anyway the ads get the message across pretty well. Check them out and let us know what you think in the comments.

iPhone 5 To Look a Lot Like the iPad 2 ?: Probably Thinner

There’s been plenty of rumors about the iPhone 5 design. One thing is for sure that Apple may reconsider the design due to the Antenna gate issue it had to face with the iPhone 4. According to Macotakara, Apple will be adopting the Aluminum casing instead of the existing glass backing. The translation of the Economic Daily News report says Apple is going for a design similar to the iPod touch, mainly because the glass back scratches easily, is heavy and was a pain to paint white.

The other big change is the antenna. The steel band around the iPhone 4 which doubles as the antenna is gone, and instead the antenna will sit behind a resin Apple logo so cellular and Wi-Fi signals can pass through. As the translation puts it, “Side exposed steel antennas seem to be abandoned, as designed in iPhone 4.” So no more death grip, hopefully!! The report also says the iPhone 5 will get the same A5 chip as the iPad 2 and should show up at WWDC in June or July.

So an aluminum back and the A5 inside, thats pretty much an iPad 2 in your pocket. And since Apple just made the iPad 2 33 percent thinner, we wont be surprised if the iPhone 5 gets thinner too. Take it with a pinch of salt though, the same source had predicted a 7 inch iPad by last Christmas.

Sneak Peek At Symbian^3 PR 2.0 Firmware Update: Better is the Word

The most awaited updates for Nokia N8 are PR 2.0 as well as PR 3.0. Although we do not have a release date for these updates, we are hoping that we would see them in the near future(say Q2 2011).

PR 2.0 is expected to bring a portrait keyboard and better web browser, something we’ve been dying for. And by better we mean faster, more stable and of course tabbed browsing. If you’ve used the Web Browser before, you know what we mean. The video gives a sneak peek to what’s being cooked and we like what they’re doing. I’ve never seen a Nokia device loading web pages this fast before, unless it was using the Opera browsers which I still believe that isn’t the real web browsing experience.

The update also brings minor changes to Mail client and Profiles. If rumors are right, then by March end we’ll see the PR 2.0 running on our devices and we have no idea when PR 3.0 will be out.

Mobile Documents Gets A Minor Update: Brings More Fixes And A New Feature

Mobile Documents By VISIARC received a minor update today to version 0.9.21 today. Mobile Documents one of the best email application out there for Symbian^3 phones. And the best part is, it offers cloud based storage. If you are new to this app, the video below should help you. Then read the changes and grab the update.

Henrik from the Visiarc team posted the changelog on the Nokia Beta Labs blog. He says the previous release (0.9.20, the MWC one with Hotmail and Exchange Activesync support) had quite many new features, so this time they wanted to be quick and fix the issues people reported. Whats fixed: Gmail and Google Apps signup, multiple Microsoft Exchange fixes (mostly signup issues again), better handling of broken email addresses, and the status field graphic glitch when you hide the app.

And the one new feature ?? You can now select where to download your files and documents. Earlier everything went to the internal phone memory whether you liked it or not, so this was long overdue if you ask me.

The app is still in beta and its free to download and use. Its up on Nokia Beta Labs now, so go get it and let us know how its working for you in the comments.
