Blackberry has just announced that it will bring the legendary Blackberry messenger to iOS and Android this summer. Thats between end of June to September. Most of you may have already been using Whatsapp or other messaging apps already, however its always good to have a choice right ? Moreover, the app will be completely free. CEO Thorsten Heins announced it on stage at the Blackberry Live event today. You will need iOS 6 or Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or above to run it, so older phones are out of luck.
At launch you get the basic BBM experience, that is chats, multi person chats, groups of upto 30 people, photo and voice note sharing and ofcourse the famous D and R that tells you when your message got delivered and read. BBM Voice, BBM Channels, screen sharing and video are not coming right away, Blackberry says those will be added later this year. Blackberry claims BBM has 60 million monthly active users. Heins called the move “a state of confidence”, saying the response to BB10 has been good enough that the time is right for BBM to stand on its own as a messaging platform.
PS: The release still depends on Apple and Google approving the app in their stores, so the dates could slip. We will let you know as soon as its out, so stay tuned !!
