Nokia requests ITC investigation into Apple patent infringement
Espoo, Finland – Nokia announced it has today filed a complaint with the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) alleging that Apple infringes Nokia patents in virtually all of its mobile phones, portable music players, and computers. The seven Nokia patents in this complaint relate to Nokia’s pioneering innovations that are now being used by Apple to create key features in its products in the area of user interfaces, as well as camera, antenna and power management technologies. Nokia says these innovations allow better user experiences, lower manufacturing costs, smaller devices and longer battery life.
“While our litigation in Delaware is about Apple’s attempt to free-ride on the back of Nokia investment in wireless standards, the ITC case filed today is about Apple’s practice of building its business on Nokia’s proprietary innovation,” said Paul Melin, general manager of patent licensing at Nokia.
The October case in Delaware was over 10 patents covering GSM, UMTS and WLAN. This lot is Nokias own proprietary work, and the ITC can block infringing products from being imported into the US, which is exactly what Nokia is asking for here. And notice the product list, phones, music players and computers. So your iPod and your Mac are in the firing line now, not just the iPhone!! Apple countersued on December 11th over 13 of its own patents. Well be watching, stay tuned.

Skyfire for s60v5 gets an update
We recently posted a news on the release on skyfire browser for the s60v5 phones. A few days back, skyfire has updated their client. As you might know, the client is unsigned. So you will have to sign it before installing it. Even if you have signed the previous client, you might need to sign the new file again, since every sis has to be signed on its own. So run the new one through the signer with your certificate and install it over the old client.
If you were wondering why the file going round is unsigned, its because the touch client isnt official yet. Their download page still lists only Windows Mobile and S60 3rd edition, nothing for 5th. 1.5 went out on December 9 for Windows Mobile alone, with full VGA, a finger friendly UI, smooth scrolling and a full screen mode, and Jeff Glueck said on the Skyfire blog that news for Nokia Symbian touch screen phones is expected very shortly. Wap Review says skyfire told them the Symbian 1.5 arrives in January and will finally support S60 5th edition.
So yes, this is an alpha, and it runs on phones like the N97, 5800, Omnia HD and Satio. Goponygo over in Spain tried it on an N97 and says flash pages and youtube videos play well, though pausing and restarting a video isnt smooth yet. Stay tuned!!
