WINAMP For Android Arrives In Beta

Its time to take a stroll down your memory lane and brush up all those good memories about listening music in your favorite Winamp music player. If you’ve been missing those moments on the go, then its your day if you are on the Android platform(Android 2.1 OS and above). It not only brings that familiar Winamp look to your phone, it brings a big chunk of the desktop player along. It went up on the Android Market about three days back, and its beta.

You get a home screen playback widget and a lockscreen widget, so you can skip tracks without unlocking the phone. Last.fm scrobbling is in there too, if you have the Last.fm app installed. And you can enqueue a song or album and save the lot as a new Winamp playlist.

Best bit for us is the sync. Over USB or WiFi it talks to your desktop Winamp, and WiFi doesnt stop at syncing, it streams music from the phone to the desktop player too. That needs the Winamp 5.59 beta on your PC, which is up on the Winamp forums. Its beta, so theres rough edges. No Shoutcast streaming yet, and no genre browsing. Nokia reports Q3 2010 net sales of EUR 10.3 billion

Looks like Nokia’s Come Back has already begun. A few minutes ago Nokia has posted their Q3 results, and it does look good. Its a good sign that Nokia is not losing the market share anymore. And we know the new devices like N8, E7 etc has been announced recently opening a hope for the coming quarters. Net sales came in at EUR 10,270 million, up 5% from last year, and they posted a profit of EUR 529 million where the same quarter last year was a loss. Operating profit was EUR 403 million against a loss of EUR 426 million a year back. They shipped 110.4 million devices, and the number we were watching, converged devices, hit 26.5 million, up 61% from last year and 10% from the last quarter. Average selling price also went up to EUR 65 from EUR 61 in Q2.

No wonder the share was trading some 7% up !! For Q4 they are guiding Devices & Services net sales of EUR 8.2 to 8.7 billion.

Its not all good news though. Nokia is cutting 1,800 jobs, mostly on the smartphone and services side. Qt becomes the sole development framework and the Symbian^4 release is dropped in favour of iterative updates. Elop, five weeks into the job, says he found a company with great strengths but one that must reassess its role in this industry. Stay tuned.

Skype For Android: Now Available

Skype is well known for its outstanding voice clarity and cheap tariff to call your loved ones on the go over internet. Skype now has a client for Symbian, Blackberry, iOS and now for Android too. We’re little surprised why it took so long but yeah its here finally. Skype for Blackberry is not for everyone though, its only the Verizon app for US customers. In fact Skype’s own announcement talks of being on “three of the most popular mobile platforms today: Android, iOS and Symbian”, so Blackberry doesnt even get a mention. Funny timing too, this landed within a day of new CEO Tony Bates walking in.

The app needs Android 2.1 or above and is a free download from the Android Market, or go to skype.com/m on your phone. You get free Skype to Skype calls, IM, low rate calls to landlines and mobiles, and it syncs your Skype contacts into the phones address book. Calls work over WiFi or 3G everywhere except the US, where its WiFi only for now, most likely thanks to Skype’s deal with Verizon.

Couple of things to note. Skype says they know about some problems on the Samsung Galaxy S and will fix them later. Its also not showing up in the Market in China or Japan. We’ll try it on a few phones here and post our thoughts, so stay tuned!!

WordPress For iOS updated: Brings Video, Auto Save And More

WordPress for iOS hasnt seen any update for a long time now. To be frank, I was browsing through the App store for some blogging apps yesterday. And guess what this morning a new update has popped in our update list. The new wordpress comes with a lot of features. To be precise, the update is version 2.6 and the biggest addition is video. You can now record a video, upload it and attach it to your post right from the app, and play it back too. Next up is autosave. When its turned on, a small grey WordPress logo shows up at the bottom right corner while you type, and tapping it takes you to a screen where you can restore an older autosave of that post. So no more losing half written posts!! They have also rewritten the local drafts part completely, the add blog setup is faster now and the old Photos tab has become a proper Media Library which shows the dimensions and file size of each item.

The WordPress folks say they spent the last three months fixing bugs as well, and a 2.6.1 bugfix release is coming shortly. The app is still free in the App Store, so go grab it if you blog from your iPhone or iPad. We will play with it for a while and let you know how it goes. Stay tuned.

Angry Birds For iOS Updated: Faster, Prettier And Tougher

Angry Birds requires no introduction. The game is now available for Symbian ^3, iOS, Android etc. Today the iOS version has seen a giant update. Game Center Support, Retina Display Support, 15 Tough Levels, New Golden Egg, Optimized Memory Usage and Localization for Efigs, Chinese and Japanese. The Game Center Support has been one of the most wanted things on this game, and Rovio has done it properly. You get achievements to unlock and leaderboards to climb, and if you were playing through Crystal all this while, your old scores and achievements carry over, so you dont start from scratch.

The Retina graphics are for the iPhone 4 and the 4th gen iPod touch, and you can see the difference the moment you start playing. The 15 new levels are the tough ones Rovio talked about a couple of weeks back, when the update, nicknamed Pig Fat, went to Apple and sat there waiting for approval. The new Golden Egg is a sound board this time.

So thats almost 200 levels for 99 cents, 59p or €0.79, and its a free update if you already own the game!! Crazy value. The webOS build should get this update before long too, so Palm owners, stay tuned. Now excuse us, we have pigs to knock over.

Beejive Instant Messaging: Now Available For Android

The popular instant messaging client for iPhone, iPad and Blackberry has just extended its support to the Android platform too. The beejive app has been widely used due to its beautiful and simple UI, wide social network support etc. It works with AIM®/iChat®/MobileMe®, MSN®/Windows Live®, Yahoo!®, Facebook, MySpace, GoogleTalk®, ICQ®, & Jabber. The app is now up on the Android Market for $9.99. Yeah, ten dollars is a bit steep for an IM app, but the feature list is pretty long. You get multiple accounts per network, group chat on AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Gtalk and Jabber, file transfers, and you can send photos, videos and even voice notes right inside the chat. There is a buddy pounce option which alerts you when a particular buddy comes online. It also reconnects on its own when you lose data coverage or take a phone call.

Push notifications are there too, but it uses Google’s Cloud to Device Messaging which is still in beta, so you’ll need Android 2.2 or above for that to work. The folks at BGR are calling it “hands down the best Android IM app”, better than even the official AIM app. Kai Yu, the founder and CEO of Beejive says the Android community has been asking for BeejiveIM from day one. Apple Remote App Updated to V2.0

Apple remote has just got an update to version 2.0 . The new update bring compatability with iPad and support for Retina Display seen on the iPhone 4 and the latest iPod Touch. The app also now supports the Shared Libraries on iTunes and the new Apple Tv which has been started to ship in the US and Canada. Apple sent out the shipping notifications on Monday and the earliest promised delivery was yesterday. If you are ordering now though, the Apple Store is showing a 2-3 week wait, and Apple has started refunding people who paid extra for expedited shipping. No word yet on whether thats demand or a production hiccup.

On the iPad you finally get a real interface instead of a stretched iPhone one. You get music album and video thumbnails and the whole list of your playlists on all that screen. Theres also a Gestures tab for the Apple Tv where you flick and drag the way you do anywhere else in iOS. Home Sharing will find and let you control shared libraries on your network, from a Mac or PC running iTunes, or a new Apple Tv. You also get multitasking under iOS 4 and fixes for iTunes 10. Its free, needs iOS 3.1.2 or later and its sitting in the App Store right now. We are playing with it on the iPad here. Go grab it !!

Foursquare app for Nokia was announced during the Nokia World this year and guess what its already at the Ovi Store waiting to get you into places with all the mayorships you can get. If you are now to Foursquare, here’s a head start. Foursquare helps you find new ways to explore the world around you. You check in at the places you go, your friends see where you are, you collect badges along the way and if you check in somewhere more than anyone else you become its Mayor. You can leave tips about a place for others to read too.

Till now Symbian users had to make do with third party clients, but this one is the official app, done together with Nokia. Its listed for S60 5th edition and the Symbian^3 phones that are yet to come. You get a Nearby list to find places around you using GPS, a friends list with their check ins and a homescreen widget that shows your friends latest check ins. Its a Web Runtime app if you were wondering, and its free as well.

iPhone 4 Sold In UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia Are Officially Unlocked

Well the iPhone heat has just hit the Middle East yesterday. We have reported the launch news yesterday and guess what we have today for you ? Record Sales report ! Yep, this might not be similar to the soaring reports from US iPhone 4 sales but this is great considering the Apple fan base we have in this region. Over in Saudi, Mobily was cleaned out on day one itself. iPhone Islam says stock was finished by 5 in the evening, with the supervisor apologising to people still in the queue. Only a handful of stores in Riyadh had it, so you can imagine the scene. Qatar went the same way, Vodafone opened the doors at 7 in the evening with a countdown and coffee, and stock moved fast.

Now the prices. Mobily has the 16GB at SAR 2,699 and the 32GB at SAR 3,399. Etisalat is asking Dh 2,049 upfront, and du wants Dh 2,459 for the 16GB. du also says theres no rental charge and no one year contract on it, so you arent tied down to them. And buyers in Saudi say their units came unlocked, which is great news if you keep swapping sims like we do.

If you were wondering about FaceTime, one buyer in Qatar isnt even sure its working on his unit, and Vodafone has told him to wait for the 4.2 update. More on that soon, stay tuned.
