Developer Steven Troughton-Smith has finally ported Siri successfully to iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4. Eventhough Siri faces poor microphone quality on the iPod Touch 4, it works quite smooth on the iPhone 4 and almost as fast as the iPhone 4S which makes Apple’s claim of needing the A5 chip baseless. Its obvious that Siri is just being kept as a selling point for the 4S.
If you were following this, Steven already had the Siri interface running on the iPhone 4 a while back but it couldnt talk to Apple’s servers, which is the whole point really. This time he teamed up with chpwn (Grant Paul) and now Siri on the iPhone 4 talks to Apple’s servers just fine. Theres a side by side video against the 4S over at 9to5mac and honestly the iPhone 4 keeps up well. On the iPod Touch 4 he says the mic is “nowhere near as good as the iPhone” so you have to speak loudly and clearly for it to pick you up.
Now dont go looking for this on Cydia. The hack needs files copied from a jailbroken iPhone 4S plus a validation token pulled live from the 4S, and its about a 20 step process as of now. Those files arent his to distribute and when asked about releasing it he said “No, I could not be a part of that”. He also fears someone will package it up and distribute it quasi-illegally or even sell it. So for now its just a proof of concept, but a very convincing one. We’ll keep you posted, stay tuned !!
