Last Monday the Blackberry services were down in Europe, Africa, Middle East and India preventing users from accessing mail and their favorite messenger service. Within a day, the service outage expanded to USA adding another millions of users to the list.
The outage has had a real bad effect on RIM. With the roll out of services like iMessages from Apple, ever growing cross platform messenger Whatsapp, BBM is now facing real competition. The last incident was a wake up call to RIM that they may not be as strong as they think they are. Rumors have always been floating on the internet about a Blackberry Messenger for Android client. If thats true, its a good move from RIM to stand against the competition. The service outage also coincided with Apple iPhone 4S launch. It would be interesting to see if anyone left Blackberry for an iPhone 4S during this period.
