Syncing iPod Touch/iPhone is a lways a hefty task. Everytime you want to add a song or app from your iTunes library, you have to connect the cable and sync. Well Greg Hughes who is a 2nd-year computer science student at the University of Birmingham in Great Britain has found a solution. He has built an app called Wi-Fi Sync that does it all over your wireless network. We watched his demo video and honestly it looks just like a normal sync. You put a small helper app on your computer, open Wi-Fi Sync on the phone, and the first time both sides ask you to pair them. Thats a one time job. After that iTunes launches on its own and the device shows the usual Sync in Progress screen with slide to cancel. He demoed the Mac version and says a Windows one is being worked on.
Now this isnt on the App Store yet. Hughes says it fully complies with Apples developer rules and he plans to submit it at the end of this week. Whether Apple agrees is anybodys guess at this point. And remember 802.11g wifi is a lot slower than the USB 2.0 cable, so a big sync will take its time. Small syncs, more often, thats the idea. Stay tuned.
